Pros & Cons of Offering Digital Downloads of Your Artwork

Should you offer digital downloads of my artwork? Obviously as an opinion article and because I work at a printing company, my answer may be a little bias but I know this is something some artists have asked themselves. Or maybe they never really considered it at all?

What Are Digital Downloads

So what are digital downloads? This is the file you can buy and receive instantly online, without needing a physical product. For artists, it usually means selling high-quality images of their artwork that customers can download and print themselves.  Probably the most common formats are JPG, PNG or PDF. Other formats may also be made available depending on the platform or how the artist is providing them.

You may not know this but digital downloads of artwork have actually grown in popularity thanks to platforms like Etsy, the desire for more personalization of home décor, and of course the rise of Print-on-Demand services. Take, for instance, Etsy. Digital downloads make up a substantial portion of revenue on that platform in terms of transaction volume. Keywords like “printable wall art” and “digital downloads” have high search volumes which also indicate a growing consumer demand for this format.

When it comes to home décor alongside the rise of print-on-demand services, digital art downloads allow buyers to quickly and easily customize their home décor. Once they download the artwork, they may go to a site like FinerWorks where they can opt for a print tailored to their whim.

So now that we have a good idea of what digital downloads are and why people are looking for them, lets also peer into the pros and cons.

Pros

Offering digital downloads of your art comes with several key benefits that make it an attractive option for artists. One of the biggest advantages is the lower production cost. Unlike prints we produce, digital downloads don’t require expenses for materials, printing, or shipping. Once you’ve created the digital file, you can sell it an unlimited number of times without worrying about inventory or additional costs.

Another major benefit is the convenience that digital downloads provide. Since the files are delivered instantly online, customers can access your art from anywhere in the world, without waiting for shipping or dealing with customs fees. This instant gratification is appealing to buyers, and it also means that artists can cater to an international audience with ease. And of course, digital downloads are an eco-friendly option, as there’s no need for physical materials or packaging, which may align more with the values of environmentally conscious customers.

Cons

Now that we have looked at some of the positives, let’s also take a look at some of the negatives. While offering digital downloads of your art has its perks, there are also some drawbacks to consider. One of the main challenges is the lack of control over print quality. I know that some may think, that is the buyer’s problem, but many artists take pride in knowing their artwork will appear a certain way when printed and don’t want that to change. Ultimately, when you sell physical prints, you can ensure they are produced to your standards, with the right paper, ink, and color accuracy. However, with digital downloads, the customer is responsible for printing the artwork themselves. This can lead to variations in print quality depending on the printer, paper type, and settings they use, which could affect the way your artwork is presented and even how you and your artwork is perceived.

Another downside is the potential for copyright infringement. Once a customer has the digital file, it’s easy for them to make unauthorized copies, share it with others, or even resell it without your permission. Some might even assume, that just because they purchased a digital download, they now have full authorization to do what they want with the artwork, even resell it. This can result in lost sales and misuse of your work, and it can be difficult to track and enforce copyright violations across the internet. Additionally, digital downloads will always have a lower perceived value compared to physical prints. Since there’s no tangible product, some buyers might see them as less special or significant, which could impact how much they’re willing to pay.

Conclusion

In conclusion, offering digital downloads of your artwork is a decision that depends on your goals as an artist and your comfort with the trade-offs. While it provides a low-cost, eco-friendly way to reach a global audience and generate passive income, it also involves surrendering some control over how your art is ultimately presented and the risk of unauthorized distribution. For artists who value quality control and want to ensure their work is experienced exactly as intended, sticking with physical prints might be the better choice. However, if you’re looking for a way to expand your audience and offer a more flexible product, digital downloads could be a worthwhile addition to your offerings. At the end of the day, it’s about finding the right balance between accessibility and maintaining the integrity of your art.
