Capturing Your Own Style for Holiday Photography
As photographers, we are visual storytellers. Use your photographs to tell the story of a special day, event, or holiday.
Preparation Tips
Before the special day, make a list of important moments and people you need to capture. For example, on Thanksgiving:
- Sitting around the table making a shopping list, capturing gestures, expressions, or the list itself for context.
- People helping with groceries, carrying bags filled with items like a turkey or cranberry sauce.
- Candid moments: kids playing, funny incidents, or kitchen chaos.
- Environmental portraits of chefs preparing meals or instructing others.
- Decorating and setting the table, capturing the artistry and effort involved.
- Moments like the turkey being served or people cheering with glasses in hand.
- Detail shots of decorations, steaming dishes, and other small elements that add atmosphere.
- Before-and-after shots of the dinner table.
- Post-dinner activities: chatting, relaxing, or cleaning up.
- Wide-angle and detail shots to provide context and depth to your story.
- Memorial photos of absent loved ones, blending them into the occasion.
Additional Tips
Think about how to visually convey elements like smell or taste. For example, steam rising from a turkey or cookies fresh out of the oven.
Adapt these tips to other events by understanding the unique steps and traditions of the occasion.
