Last year we printed countless giclee prints on fine art paper. Frequently we discuss what sizes are popular with our user base. This time we want to share the actual numbers, percentage-wise as to what sizes were most popular during the 2024 year. Over the past few years, these sizes have had similar numbers.
Width (inches) | Height (inches) | Percentage Ordered |
8 | 10 | 26.9% |
11 | 14 | 9.2% |
8 | 8 | 8.8% |
5 | 7 | 5.7% |
8 | 12 | 3.8% |
10 | 10 | 3.6% |
9 | 12 | 3.4% |
16 | 20 | 3.2% |
12 | 12 | 2.3% |
other | other | 2.1% |
Use these numbers to help you decide what sizes you might want to offer if you are selling your prints.
You would think that since we do very large prints, you would see many BIG prints. There is no doubt that we do print a lot of large and even panoramics on Fine Art Papers, but those large sizes usually are seen with things like canvas prints, metal prints, and other types of ready-to-hang wall decor.
Fine Art Paper prints also tend to be ordered in bulk more often which may be why two of the most common sizes in general lead the way.
Why are these the most popular? The top two frames are also easy to come by, but what probably drives it more is they tend to be easy to sell on online stores and marketplaces like Etsy. The other reason is of course cost. One thing I tell artists is don’t necessarily limit yourself to just sizes like these but experiment with custom sizes that might give your artwork a different perspective.
Why Print Size is Important
Print size typically refers to the size of the actual printed artwork, so the numbers above would reflect that. Normally if the artwork does not fit that size, portions of it will be cropped. So selecting a print size that either perfectly matches the aspect ratio of your artwork or is as close to it as can be is important if you want to preserve as much of the picture as possible.
Do Borders Affect PrintSize?
The answer is yes. When a print has a border, you will have something called a “Sheet Size” which is the actual dimensions of the artwork. So an 11×14 print with a 1-inch border would have a sheet size of 13×16″. That is because you have to add 1 inch on all four sides of the 11×14 print.
What About Frame Size?
I think most people realize that when it comes to a frame’s size, we are essentially talking about the inner dimensions where the artwork is nested. Every once in a while some folks assume this is the outer dimensions of the frame but that is quite rare.

Thanks for sharing this information! It’s so interesting to see what a strong lead the 8×10″ print size had last year. I did a similar year in review for my online print shop and found that my most popular size was 12×18″, followed by 8×10″, then 5×7″. I was really surprised — I expected 11×14″ to be more popular. Would love similar posts from you all that share data — super interesting and helpful!
I almost always order 9×12 or 12×16. Mostly because I’m doing mostly in cropped , but usually edited, photos. Most of my photos are 3:4 or 4:3, so it multiplies up to those dimensions. Then with a mat board of 2 inches on each side I can stock just 2 sizes of mat boards – 13×16 and 16x 20.
I also make up those 2 sizes of frames in my shop.
I wonder if people getting photos printed in a size different than the standard 3:4 dimensions always crop the photo on one side or the other?
Great article to read! I’d be curious to get the same information for the larger framed art prints, canvas, metal, etc… what are the popular sizes and which are most purchased.
Thank you.
